Alpintourismus im tropischen Ostafrika (Alpine Tourism in Tropical East Africa). Case Studies from the Mountainous Regions of Mt. Kenya, Kilimandscharo und Ruwenzorie
The research project
Due to the expansion of international alpine tourism in recent decades, with its comparatively high employment effects, this economic sector has had a considerable impact on livelihood styles, especially in high-mountain rural regions of Mount Kenya, Kilimanjaro and Ruwnezori. It should not be overlooked that people working on the mountain (guides, porters, etc.) not only derive a substantial part of their monetary income from tourism, but also gain access to economic networks and further training in tourism, and occasionally receive job offers abroad through international contacts. However, people involved in tourism do not see their jobs as attractive or sustainable, as working conditions and pay are usually relatively poor and there are hardly any opportunities for advancement, because the higher-ranking jobs are held by external people from the country’s metropolises or by foreign workers.
