Working group Critical Geographies of Global Inequalities

Geographieunterricht rassismuskritisch gestalten – Sensibilisierung von Lehramtsstudierenden für den Umgang mit heterogenen Lerngruppen (Lehrlabor) (Designing Geography Lessons Critical of Racism – Sensitizing Students in Teaching Education for Dealing with Heterogeneous Learning Groups (Teaching Laboratory))

The research project

Cultural diversity in the classroom is currently a hot topic in teacher education and training. Especially in geography lessons, where teaching materials convey knowledge about other people, places, countries and cultures in texts, pictures, graphics and maps, the danger of stereotyping is particularly great and, coupled with teachers’ insufficient knowledge of racist modes of action, can also lead to the unintended marking and exclusion of students with a so-called migration background. In the project, power-critical approaches of postcolonial studies and critical racism research are introduced into the teacher training program in an innovative form and the school materials are critically examined in order to convey sensitivity with and strategies for action in dealing with stereotyping concepts and thus also with the heterogeneity of the student body.
