Digital learning portal “Geographie rassismuskritischer unterrichten” (“Teaching Geography in a More Racism-Critical Way”)
This digital learning portal offers support for teachers and interested parties to learn more about the history of geography and provides some suggestions for a more racism-sensitive approach to geographical teaching materials. In particular, images, maps, and concepts of geography are targeted in order to clarify the question of categorizations and effectiveness of maps and images, to question concepts, and to allow for other perspectives.
To use the portal
WHO IS THE PORTAL FOR?
- (Teaching) students in all semesters of geography and related subjects with little or no experience in lesson planning and teaching.
- Geography teachers with a practical orientation who would like to take a look at their previous teaching units and the teaching materials they have used through a lens that is critical of racism.
- Anyone interested in learning about geographic content from a perspective that aims to be low-discriminatory.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT?
- A total of three self-contained modules with interactive exercises.
- And suggestions for reflection (you can find an overview of the content modules below).
- Explanations and recommendations for action for teaching geography while being critical of racism.
- As well as a collection of further links and materials (“Material Case”).
HOW DO I USE THE PORTAL?
- The preceding module for self-reflection is a central element of the portal and provides the fundamental basis for understanding. It should be run as a starter.
- The three other modules can then be completed quite individually.
- With the exception of the comprehensive introductory module, you should allow at least 30 minutes per module.
